Ljubljana
The gorgeous capital of Slovenia features a very attractive centre, where the Ljubljanica river winds its way and the old city core pulsates under the castle hill. Here, medieval, baroque and secessionist buildings go hand in hand with the masterpieces of the greatest Slovene architect Jože Plečnik. A visit to the colourful market is one of the highlights of a sightseeing tour of Ljubljana, which may be rounded off with relaxation in one of the numerous popular bars and restaurants on the banks of the Ljubljanica.
Postojna cave and Predjama castle
You may visit the mysterious underworld beauty of Postojna cave on a highly-informative guided tour. An electric train will take you into the cave, from where you will continue on foot. The magical stalactites and underground halls are sure to captivate you. You will also view the unusual ‘human fish’, which was thought to be a baby dragon in the 17th century. Not far from Postojna cave is Predjama castle, former residence of Slovenia’s Robin Hood, the legendary rebel knight Erasmus.
Slovenian coast
Piran is the jewel in the crown of the Slovenian Adriatic coast and a town with a special Mediterranean flair. It has managed to retain the medieval layout of its core with narrow streets that will lead you to the church of St George and farther up to Piran’s defensive walls. Both are wonderful viewing points, from where you may catch sight of the Alps and the Italian coast in fine weather. Have a look at the wonderful red Venetian-gothic house called ‘Benečanka’ (‘Venetian’), which was built by a wealthy merchant from Venice for his beloved lady from Piran.
